Planning for Your Cruise: A Look at Onboard Communications
As you plan for your cruise vacation, you may be one
of those people who worries about how you are going
to stay in touch with people back home, with the men
and women back at the office for example. Good or bad,
right or wrong, many people in this day and age combine
a bit of work (or even a good deal of work) with their
vacation and holiday travel.
With this in mind, you may be wondering what types
of communications will be available to you onboard a
cruise ship.
Through this article, you will be provided with a general
overview of what you can expect in the way of ship to
shore communication while you are on a vacation cruise
or a cruise trip.
Kick Your Cell Phone to the Curb
If you are a person who appears to have a cell phone
connected to the ear, you might as well forget about
using the cell phone -- a standard cell phone -- while
onboard a cruise ship. Except when you are in certain
(and by all means not all) ports of call, your cell
phone will be or little or no use to you.
Satellite Phones Generally Will Work
On the other hand, if you have satellite phone technology,
you should be able to make phone calls from ship to
shore a good deal of the time while you are traveling.
Of course, you may end up in geographic positions or
certain times of the day when your satellite phone will
be of no use to you.
Onboard Telephones
Cruise ships normally do have telephone systems available
to passengers that will allow for ship to shore calls
-- rather like the telephone that we now oftentimes
see in the backs of seats on airplanes.
You do need to keep in mind that the costs and charges
associated with calls made from these types of onboard
telephones can be rather high. In other words, this
likely will not be a communication method that you will
want to use with any degree of regularity.
Onboard Faxes
If you find that you need to send or receive a fax
for some reason, typically a cruise ship will have these
types of services available to you. As with the onboard
telephones, you do need to keep in mind that the costs
associated with these types of fax transmissions can
be rather expensive.
Accessing the Internet
More and more often, a typical cruise ship is taking
pains to aid their passengers in being able to access
the Net while traveling onboard a cruise ship. Of course,
many of the same difficulties that can be experienced
with satellite phone technology is also evident when
it comes to some of the Net based technology that is
being placed on a typical cruise ship in this day and
age.
